In the Academy division, riding students compete on lesson horses against others of the same age and skill level. Classes are judged on the rider’s ability, not the horse, creating an even playing field where skill and good horsemanship shine. Academy is designed to be welcoming, affordable, and accessible — the perfect first step into the exciting world of competition.

Some shows feature Academy classes within their regular schedule, while others host special Academy sessions, often on Saturday mornings or afternoons. Entry fees are low, and a single horse can be shown by multiple riders in different classes, making participation practical for both students and instructors.

While rules vary slightly from state to state and from show to show, Academy riders must be enrolled in a lesson program. The horse they ride — whether owned by the stable or an individual — must be actively used in a lesson program, ensuring that these are true school horses, not privately owned show horses.

In Arizona, riders typically compete in two main classes:

  • Equitation – Judged on the rider’s form, position, diagonals, leads, and overall skill.
  • Showmanship – Focuses on how well the rider presents the horse to its best advantage, while still maintaining correct form and accuracy.

Classes are offered for a variety of levels and disciplines, including walk-trot, walk-trot-canter, pattern work. Both youth and adult riders can take part, making Academy a true community sport.
